Daniel Gibson Defending Wife’s Honor in Battery Charge

(L-R) Keyshia Cole and Daniel Gibson attend the 2013 Essence Festival at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on July 6, 2013 in New Orleans, Louisiana

Daniel “Boobie” Gibson tells TMZ that he was just defending his wife’s honor when he got into an altercation with a man at the Essence Music Festival earlier this month.

Gibson, who played with the Cleveland Cavaliers last season, called in to “TMZ Live” to explain why he turned himself in to police in New Orleans today on 2nd degree battery charges.

Boobie says his wife Keyshia Cole was performing at the event when a man approached her and spouted off some very “disrespectful” comments toward the singer.

Boobie says an altercation broke out and “safety was threatened,” so Boobie says he “needed to take action.”

Despite the allegations against him, Boobie says he did nothing wrong, adding, “I have nothing to be ashamed of or hide.”

Jay Z’s ‘Magna Carta’ Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart

Jay-Z

Jay Z’s “Magna Carta Holy Grail” album storms in at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 528,000 copies in its first week according to preliminary data from Nielsen SoundScan.

The larger-than-expected start is the second-biggest sales week for a single album this year. It bypasses the previous runner-up, Daft Punk’s “Random Access Memories,” which opened with 339,000 in May. Both albums trail behind the year’s largest frame, racked up when Justin Timberlake’s “The 20/20 Experience” exploded with 968,000 in its first week.

“Magna Carta” also gives the hip-hop icon his 13th No. 1 — extending his record for the most chart-toppers by a solo act in history. Among all artists, only the Beatles — with 19 No. 1s — have more. Tied for the third-most No. 1s are Bruce Springsteen and Elvis Presley, who each have 10 leaders.

Jay Z has seen every one of his solo studio albums reach No. 1 since 1998’s “Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life,” which also happened to mark his first No. 1. His 13 chart-toppers also include three collaborative albums: one each with R. Kelly, Linkin Park and Kanye West, respectively.

Harvard Establishes Nas Hip Hop Fellowship

Harvard University has established the Nasir Jones Hip Hop Fellowship to fund scholars and artists who show productive scholarship and creative potential in hip hop.

Nas tells Rolling Stone,

“I am immensely over-the-top excited about the Nasir Jones Hip-Hop Fellowship at Harvard. From Queens, NY to true cultural academia. My hopes are that greed for knowledge, art, self-determination and expression go a long way. It is a true honor to have my name attached to so much hard work, alongside great names like Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and W.E.B. Du Bois and to such a prestigious and historical institution, and all in the name of the music I grew to be a part of.”

Still #NOJUSTICE for Trayvon Martin; They got it Wrong Again!!!!

Trayvon Martin

While myself like thousands around the nation and even the world learned the #notguilty verdict;  my mouth dropped in disbelief that in 2013 we still have so far to go as a nation, as a people, for BLACK people.  As an educated Black man, I am hurt, heartbroken and literally disgusted.   However, knowing our history and the struggles we had to endure, can I say I am really surprised?  I am so concerned for this upcoming generation and how blind-sided they have become.  We must continually educate and protect our young one’s by our own measures that they do not grow up in this world clueless.

Trayvon did not die in vain, because this history defining moment hopefully have changed how not only the justice system review some of their procedures and statues around gun control and civil rights but as Americans living in this country and how we respond as responsible human beings. I can sit and write forever but many hearts are heavy and everyone has an opinion, I pray for The Martin family and all the supporters who made their voices heard so that George Zimmerman could even go to trial.

Below check out what some of our notable celebrities had to say and their reactions:

Diddy: MY PRAYERS GO OUT TO TRAYVON’S FAMILY!!!! GOD BLESS THEM!!!!

Estelle: This is purely ridiculous. The fck kinda bs verdict is that??! My heart hurts for his parents right now. Just…

Busta Rhymes: #ZIMMERMAN #NOTGUILTY!! GOD GOT A GREATER PUNISHMENT 4 THIS FUCK BOY THAN THE COURT SYSTEM!! #Staytuned… WE WILL LIVE 2 SEE HIM PAY!!

The Game: I feel for his parents & family…… Lord knows my heart couldn’t hold the amount of pain they’re drowning in. #RIPTrayvonMartin

Ciara: Whenever Some One Has Done Wrong, They Will Have To Face It. No Matter What. God Will Handle It. For There Is No Power Greater Than His.

Lupe Fiasco: Nobody knows what really happened except trayvon and Zimmerman. The justice system relies on reasonable doubt not our emotions. The case should have never been televised as the potential to antagonize US race relations was, in my dumb, opinion too risky & unnecessary
