N.W.A. Biopic “Straight Outta Compton” Finds Its Director In F. Gary Gray

After years in a developmental state of flux, it appears that New Line Cinema has officially brought director F. Gary Gray (Friday) on board as director for their N.W.A. biopic, Straight Outta Compton.

Before the studio and producers decided on Gray for the directing gig, John Singleton (Boyz N The Hood), George Tillman (Notorious), and Elgin James (Little Birds) were in the running for the long-gestating project that is finally gaining traction.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the script, which was written by Andrea Berloff (World Trade Center) “details the rise and fall of the Compton, California-based group, whose initials stood for ‘N*ggaz With Attitude.’ The members included drug-dealer-turned-label founder Eazy-E, a young DJ Dr. Dre, and the politically active Ice Cube, plus MC Ren and DJ Yella. Another member, Arabian Prince, left N.W.A. before the group released the groundbreaking debut album Straight Outta Compton in 1988.”

Rumors in the past have suggested that Eric Wright Jr., who is more famously known as Lil’ Eazy E, could be at the top of the list ton portray his father in the biopic.

After being removed from the shortlist to direct next summer’s Marvel tentpole Captain America 2, Gray finalized talks with New Line to get the deal done and put the biopic on the fast-track.

Straight Outta Compton is being produced by former N.W.A. member Ice Cube and his Cube Vision partner, Matt Alvarez, along with Eazy-E’s widow, Tomica Woods.

There is currently no production-start or release date for Straight Outta Compton.

Rihanna Wants to Portray Whitney Houston in Biopic

There hasn’t even been an official announcement of a Whitney Houston biopic yet, and already folks are putting it out there that they would love to play the part of the singer.

Days after Robin Thicke suggested his wife Paula Patton would be perfect for the role, Rihanna is now making it known that she wants to be in the running as well.

“That would be something that I would have to give my entire life to do because I would want to really pull it off,” Rihanna told The Press Association. “That’s a huge, huge role and whoever does it has to do a good job.”

Reports surfaced that record label executive Clive Davis was in the early stages of producing a biopic to honor his close friend, but Davis has since denied the rumors. Rihanna was reportedly on the short list of contenders for the role, along with Jennifer Hudson, Vivica Fox and Whitney’s “Sparkle” co-star Jordin Sparks. Brandy was also mentioned in some reports. Yet another report mentioned that Whitney personally wanted actress Meagan Good to play her on film.

For Rihanna, portraying Whitney would also give her the chance to represent her musical inspiration on the big screen.

“My first song that I remember falling in love with was a Whitney Houston song — ‘I Will Always Love You,’” Rihanna said. “It was really inspiring and it made me develop a passion for music, so really she’s partly responsible for me being here in this industry.”

Ice Cube Gives Update On “Last Friday”; Talks Future Directorial Projects

Back in November, rumors stated that Ice Cube would be writing, producing, and possibly directing the final installment in the Friday franchise, tentatively titled Last Friday, and that the first film’s co-star, Chis Tucker, would be returning.

In an interview with Collider, Ice Cube, who is doing press rounds for his role in the upcoming comedy 21 Jump Street, offered a significant update on the highly-anticpiated sequel, including the revelation that he has already begun writing the film.

“There’s a lot of movement. I’m writing the script right now, so we worked out a deal with New Line. The ball is rolling. We invited everybody back and we’ll have a fun movie.”

When asked if Chris Tucker, who famously portrayed the character Smokey in the first Friday almost 15 years ago, would be returning, Cube responded with “I hope so.”

Tucker, who has not starred in a film since Rush Hour 3, is currently filming David O. Russell’s The Silver Lining’s Playbook, marking his first return to the silver screen since 2007. The film is set for theatrical release this November and also stars Robert DeNiro and Bradley Cooper.

Having directed the ESPN 30 For 30 documentary “Straight Outta L.A.” last year, it was only natural for Collider to ask Cube if he had plans for any future directorial projects outside of Last Friday. “Yeah it’s always in the works,” he answered. “I gotta find pet projects, things that I’m really into. If not, I’ll just produce. If I find something that I just know I have to do, then I’ll direct.”

Ice Cube can next be seen in the comedy 21 Jump Street which hits theaters on March 21.

Nick Cannon Plans To Remake “HOUSE PARTY”

Can Nick Cannon pull off a classic? The host of ‘America’s Got Talent’ is set to create a film that will serve as a remake of the 90’s hit House Party. This is the first time the actor, who recently suffered from kidney failure, will step into the director’s chair.

“[I’m] taking a lot of young hip-hop acts of today and putting them in a movie with a bunch of comedians, make something happen there,” said Cannon at Bleu magazine’s cover party, where he was hailed “Man of the Year.”

Cannon didn’t reveal who he’ll be including in the project, which is being distributed through Lionsgate, but we’re sure his protégé Cory Guns will have a great role.

It would be great if he could get some cameos from the original stars.
