Rihanna Breaks Chart Records with 10th No. 1 Single ‘S&M’

Rihanna is whipping the charts into a frenzy. The pop siren soars to the top of the singles chart this week with “S&M,” smashing records in her path.

Her raunchy Loud single and its remix featuring Britney Spears moves 2-1 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week, becoming her 10th No. 1 hit. But that isn’t her only accomplishment. Rihanna earns 10 No. 1s on the Hot 100 in the shortest span for a solo artist since first debuting atop the chart with “SOS” four years, 11 months ago.

At 23 years old, she also becomes the youngest artist to achieve 10 No. 1s on the Hot 100, besting labelmate Mariah Carey who was 25 at the time. Additionally, she tallied her No. 1s faster than Carey. Among all artists, the Barbados singer follows only the Beatles and the Supremes for the fastest accumulation of 10 Hot 100 No. 1s.

“10th!!!!!Now LOOK at what u did… #RihannaNavy U rocked that shit OUT!THANK U so much, this is the BEST news!U guys #werk hard #whosyadaddy,” tweeted a thrilled RiRi, who also thanked Britney Spears’ fans. “#BIGUP to @britneyspears and all her wonderful fans who supported this song.”

Steve Bartels, Island Def Jam President and COO, added, “Rihanna’s tenth #1 single is a monumental accomplishment and a testament to her incredible artistry. This was a truly collaborative and creative effort, spearheaded by Rihanna’s tireless work and aided in no small part by the incredible Britney Spears and her team. I am extremely proud of Rihanna, her ongoing dominance on the charts, and the entire IDJ team who worked so diligently to bring this one home.

Game Detained in Canada for 14 Days

Game’s 4/20 went up in smoke, but for the wrong reason. The “Red Nation” rapper was detained by Canadian officials after attempting to enter the country.

Fresh from Australia, Game was traveling to Canada to perform at several shows on Wednesday, April 20. After waiting in customs for three hours, he was denied entry. “Customs officials just denied me entry into Canada. I’m sorry 2 ALL my fans but I was mislead by promoters & assured I would be able 2 enter,” he tweeted.

But things soon went from bad to worse. “This just in: I’m being detained in Canada for 14 days until they process my inadmissability then I’ll have a hearing heard by a judge,” he added. “At that point the judge will decide to either deport me or give me a sentence for violating Canada’s immigrant entry laws.”

Game expressed his unhappiness with the unexpected circumstances. “F%cked up situation !!! But at least they let me call home, & tweet before they lock a n!gga up !!! Gotta turn in my property, y’all be kool,” he wrote. “Gotta give up my phone & property. This some straight bullshit ! Flew all the way from LA to be denied and detained ?!?! WTF.”

NY Mag reviews Beyonce’s ‘Girls’ Plus Official Radio Edit of ‘Girls’

After a painful few weeks of breathless anticipation, finally Beyoncé’s new single is here. It’s called “Girls”; it’s produced by Diplo and Switch (which would have been a bigger deal as far as incongruity of pairing if Odd Future’s Frank Ocean wasn’t in the running); and it’s kind of a monster — aggressive and intense and totally committed in all the ways you’d hope for the first big move in a new promo run from one of our most cherished pop stars. That means it’s as immediately familiar as it is bluntly effective; we have given in to it already. It’s also very declarative: See, according to B, it’s girls who run the world. This isn’t technically true, of course; world leaders are still disappointingly disproportionately male. But in this alternate Beyoncé reality, all those independent women Destiny’s Child groomed many years back have risen up and forcefully taken over (yes, we’re getting this more from the leaked video stills than the actual words of the song, but gender warfare is pretty fun to imagine). Anyway, Angela Merkel is rocking so hard right now.

Beyoncé’s ‘Girls’ Video Will Be One of Her Biggest Ever, Says Director

Beyoncé is pulling out the big guns in the music video for “Girls,” the lead single off her highly-anticipated fourth album. According to the clip’s director Francis Lawrence, the visuals go above and beyond what the superstar has done in previous videos.

“It’ll be big, it’ll probably be one of the bigger Beyoncé music videos ever done,” he told MTV NEWS. “And, I can say that I think the song is unbelievable.”

The famed visionary confirmed “Girls” as the song’s title, but kept mum on the concept of the video. “She would probably have me shot if I said anything. … Some stuff spilled out, but she wasn’t happy about it, so I’ve been sworn to secrecy,” he said, referring to pho tosthat surfaced from the shoot.

“Girls,” which was filmed over several days in California, marks the first music video he’s helmed since Lady Gaga’s Grammy-winning “Bad Romance” in 2009. He hopes Bey’s latest will achieve the same success.

“The Gaga thing took me by surprise, ’cause I’ve done videos for probably 15 years, and I had forgotten what to felt like to have a video premiere and have it be anticipated and have it explode,” he added. “And yeah I hope the same for Beyoncé, but I don’t know if that’s gonna happen. It is a fantastic song, so I really hope that song catches for her, and I think the video’s gonna be really fun and cool and different for her.”
