R.I.P. to our DC Pioneer and Legend!! We Love You Chuck!!!

Chuck Brown, who styled a unique mix of funk, soul and Latin party sounds to create go-go music in the nation’s capital, has died after suffering from pneumonia. He was 75.

Brown died today, Wednesday, May 16th  at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore. Hospital spokesman Gary Stephenson confirmed Brown had died after a hospital stay that began April 18.

Thanks to Brown and his deep, gravelly voice, go-go music was uniquely identified with Washington. That’s where he continued to play the city’s club circuit to a loyal audience late in life.

Mayor Vincent Gray said the city will be a different place without Brown.

“Go-go is D.C.’s very own unique contribution to the world of pop music,” he said. “Today is a very sad day for music lovers the world over.”

In 2007 Brown told The Associated Press that go-go was influenced by sounds and fast beats he heard early in life, growing up in North Carolina and Virginia, combined with his experience later, playing with a Latin band.

“Go-go is a music that continues on and on, and on and it’s a call and response communication with the audience,” Brown said.

Go-go was heavy on percussion with drummers as lead players, accented by guitar riffs, keyboards and horns. Sometimes they would play for two or three hours without stopping. In between tunes, Brown would keep the thunk of percussion going and talk to the crowd.

Brown’s hit “Bustin’ Loose” with his group, the Soul Searchers, helped define go-go’s sound. It spent several weeks atop the R&B chart in 1979. Rapper Nelly later sampled Brown’s “Bustin’ Loose” in 2002 for his massive hit “Hot in Herre,” which won Nelly a Grammy.

Jay-Z Announces ‘Made In America’ Festival Going Down in Philly this Labor Day (Video)

Anything Jay-Z does is news these days. He called a press conference to announce he would be putting together a music festival in Philadelphia on Labor Day Weekend.

With Philly representer Freeway standing off to the side, Jay-Z made his announcement on the steps of the Art Museum. Our friends at Hot 107.9 Philly were on hand for Jay’s announcement and fans’ reactions. Blue Ivy’s poppa explained his goal with the festival is to push the culture forward with good music and good vibes. The show will be produced by LiveNation and boasts more than 28 acts. Jay-Z did proclaim about 70% of the acts are already onboard and excited for the festival.

Fans are appreciative of the festival and can’t wait to see who Jay-Z got to perform. Jay-Z plans on bringing artists from R&B, Hip-Hop, rock, Latin, and Dance. It’s sure to be lots of fun going down in Philly on September 1st and 2nd. The only question I have is being that LiveNation is producing it, how much are those tickets going to be. You know they are known for crazy expensive ticket prices.

Lil Boosie Acquitted on Murder Charges

Baton Rouge rapper Lil Boosie was acquitted of murder last week and as soon as he finishes his eight year prison sentence on unrelated drug charges he’s coming home.

Torence “Lil Boosie” Hatch, who pleaded guilty to setting up a drug smuggling ring inside Angola prison while awaiting his murder trial was found not guilty of hiring a hitman to kill his baby mama’s brother.

The entire case hinged on testimony from alleged hitman Michael ‘Marlo Mike’ Louding who originally claimed Boosie ordered the hit, but testified in court that his taped confession [which was lost and not played during the trial] was coerced by police officers who threatened to harm his family.

From USA Today

Following the verdict, more than 100 people celebrated in a small park in front of the courthouse, laughing, slapping hands and dancing around. When Hatch’s team of defense attorneys appeared, the crowd loudly chanted “Boosie, Boosie, Boosie.” When the attorneys began to descend the court house’s steps, some in the crowd shrieked and mobbed them, congratulating them on doing a good job.

Rihanna Admits Melt Down

Last November, amid a string of canceled concert dates, rumors spread that Rihanna was on the verge of a nervous break down.  Rihanna admits the rumors were true.  In a recent interview RiRi opened up about how hard it was touring and recording her new album ‘Talk that Talk’ at the same time.

Rihanna reveals,

”One morning I woke up and started crying so hard. I finally just got to my bed from the IV [drip] and I was just like, ‘Good I can actually get to sleep tonight’ because we stayed up all night’ and I finished [the album] at 5pm the day before.”

”I get in bed and it must have been two hours in before my phone started going off. I was so frustrated I kept ignoring the phone.”

”I know I’m sick but I’m the only person who can get it done so it was so frustrating so I was angry. I was so angry, I was so overwhelmed that I was sick, it felt crazy.”

”I started crying really, really hard in my pillow. It was aggressive. I don’t cry loads. If I cry it’s because I’m very angry and I can’t do anything about it, because I’ve run into a dead end. But this time I needed to hear it, I almost wanted to punch somebody.”

Justice was Served!!! A Statement from the Hudson Family

Jennifer Hudson releases a statement regarding the guilty verdict of William Balfour.

“We have many people to thank but our first thank you is to God, always. We are so grateful to prosecutors James McKay, Jennifer Bagby and Veryl Gambino and State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez and her team for their dedication and tireless work from the beginning.”

“We have the best police department and they have been with us every step of the way. We thank all of the State’s witnesses who came forward on our behalf.”

“We have felt the love and support from people all over the world and we’re very grateful. We want to extend a prayer from the Hudson family to the Balfour family.”

“We have all suffered terrible loss in this tragedy. And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled in them that perish: in whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should not dawn upon them (2 Corinthian 4:3-4). It is our prayer that the Lord will forgive Mr. Balfour of these heinous acts and bring his heart into repentance someday.”
