Police Say Louisiana Woman Lied About Being Set on Fire

Sharmeka Moffitt got the nation in an uproar after news broke that she was the victim of a hate crime. As reported, Moffitt was said to have been set on fire by members of the K-K-K, who allegedly put those very letters on her car along with a racial slur.

Police in Winnsboro, La. announced late Tuesday (Oct. 23) that she in fact fabricated the vicious story. “The evidence does not support the statement that she was attacked by three males,” said Louisian State Police spokeswoman Lt. Julie Lewis.

Since she remains in care at the LSU Health Sciences Center, authorities have not yet been able to interview Moffitt, but came to the conclusion through findings from forensic evidence.

Following the proclamation, the 20-year-old’s family released a statement:

Our family is devastated to learn the circumstances surrounding our daughter’s injuries. While this was not the resolution we had expected, it is a resolution, and we appreciate the thorough investigation by the local and state police as well as federal agencies.

We are sincerely sorry for any problems this may have caused and wish to express our appreciation for the outpouring of love, prayers and support we have received from friends, acquaintances, church organizations and government officials.

Over the coming days and weeks, our focus will be on Sharmeka and her recovery. We ask that you continue to pray for her and for our family, and that you respect our privacy at this difficult time.
